信楽に滞在する期間、私は過去６ヶ月間に渡り描き続けた「アメ（アカミミガメの略）」の素描を伴って来日しました。私の作り出す陶塑作品には「アメ」、そして自身の思い出が込められています。
私にとって「アメ」の甲羅のぼんやりとして泥だらけの黒と緑色のパターンが最も神秘的です。そして「アメ」の笑うでもなく泣くでもない表情は、我々の日常の生活での心情とリンクし、心を動かされます。
アメの素描を通じて、都会生活に迫られる日々の中で少しだけ静寂と楽しみを見つけられました。家で飼っている「アメ」を手のひらにおいて見ていると、「アメ」というこの古めかしい生物は実に不思議だなと感じます。
子供の頃にも、私は「アメ」を飼っていましたが、最近縁があり、また新たに2匹の「アメ」を飼い始めました。再び「アメ」を飼い始めることで、子供の頃の出来事が思い起こされ、当時よく行った公園を思い出しました。（その公園は実は50年前にあるアメリカ人芸術家が創造した超現実的なものであったと発見。）
信楽での滞在中、私は静かに考えをまとめることができました。
土は私の思考、創造、想起を喚起し、それぞれ中のすばらしい瞬間を作品としてまとめ上げる事が出来ました。
“For me, the lacklustre, muddy black and green patterns of the turtle shells are the most mysterious. Isn’t it so that their expressions—neither laughing or crying—resemble our everyday state of being?”
Through the depiction of red-eared slider turtles, I have been able to find within an oppressive urban living some fun and quietness.
Every time I place the red-eared sliders in my hands, I can feel how magical these ancient creatures are.
Since I have raised red-eared sliders in my childhood, and by chance I started raising two new ones not too long ago, this has led me to recall a playground I frequented as a child—its environment and associated feelings. (It is only recently that I discovered that the playground was designed 50 years ago by American artist, and the designs were very much ahead of its time.)
During my stay at Shigaraki, its quietness allowed me to collect my thoughts. Clay has helped me think, create, recollect, and piece together all those wondrous moments.
