Chambers of the Heart

Wang Tat Lau is a visual artist and educator originally from Hong Kong, who recently transitioned to Seattle, USA. He holds a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lau's artistic practice encompasses various media, including ceramics, printmaking, painting, and Chinese calligraphy, often exploring themes of contradiction—such as intimacy versus estrangement—in his work.

He has participated in artist residencies across Asia and Europe, including the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park as a studio artist. His recent solo exhibition, Time Borrowed, Space Transited, showcased reflections on identity and belonging after a brief stay in Vietnam, before moving to Seattle. Lau engages in ongoing explorations in mixed media and installation art, delving into the intersections of culture and contemporary practices. Personal memories, fragments of events, and the reinterpretation of things reassembled are starting points for his work. Coupled with the unique qualities of each material, he engages in the exploration of the inner mind and his surroundings, reflecting a continuous journey of artistic metamorphosis.

Contradictions such as “intimate and strange” or “close and distant” best describe his artwork. While handling each creative medium, Lau likes to return to being “naïve,” allowing uncertainty and the unexpected to help the artwork take shape. This process mirrors how we manage life itself.
